Sustainable Library: Lessons from Joyner Library’s Green Task Force

In Summer 2008, staff at Joyner Library formed the Green Task Force. The group’s mission is to

research, propose, implement, and promote green education and sustainable environmental

practices in the university library environment. This session will focus on organizing the group,

developing a mission and goals, developing obtainable strategies, green projects, tools for

communication, lessons learned, and suggestions for the future.

You are invited to attend a panel discussion that focuses on the role of the Library Diversity committee.  Alan Bailey and Robert James (ECU), Kawanna Bright (NCSU), Bridgette Sanders (UNCC) and Rachel Stinehelfer and Jason Alston (UNCG) will share their experiences and resources.  The panel will respond to questions related to developing their committee charge, initiating interest among library staff, seeking ideas for programming and identifying opportunities to collaborate with unites outside of the Library.

Web2.0 has a language of its own. NetVibes,Trailfire, Twitter, Blist, Delicious, Igoogle, Googledocs, Elluminate, Cramster, Cometdocs, Zamzar, SketchUp, Zoho, DimDim, Jing, etc. How can we ever keep up with all of the new apps? What are all of those strange little icons at the bottom of your screen? Here is a tour of some of the recent Web 2.0 products. We don’t have to use them all; it’s just nice to have a tour of what some of them are and what they are used for. Lynn McCormick is the Coordinator for Library Evening Services at Pitt Community College.

The NCknows service provides around the clock live reference assistance to residents of North Carolina, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days of the year. The librarians are not up all night - instead, North Carolina participates in QuestionPoint's 24/7 Reference Cooperative, a collaborative of over 1,500 libraries in the US and UK that cooperatively staff this live chat service.

Phil Blank, Coordinator of NCknows, will discuss how NCknows works and how it provides great service to users throughout North Carolina, through the cooperative efforts of the over 100 member libraries. He will also provide information on how NC libraries can join NCknows and offer 24/7 service through their library website.

The Three C’s of Graphic Novels:  Criteria, Collection and Curriculum

In this session, you will learn about the NC Department of Public Instruction's new criteria for selecting graphic novel resources for your collections. Participants will learn about curriculum-based titles as well as collection development issues. Information will be provided regarding recent research on the advantages of using graphic novels with students.

Creating an Inclusive Library Collection for Children

Join Alan R. Bailey, Assistant Professor/Education Curriculum Library, J.Y. Joyner Library, East Carolina University, as he discusses ways to develop inclusive library collections for children, ages 3-6. Based on the primary dimensions of diversity identified by Marily Loden and July B. Rosener, themes include age, gender, ethnic heritage, race, mental/physical abilities and characteristics and sexual orientation.  Examples of outstanding titles will be presented and and an annotated bibliography will be available.

New Ways of Exposing Digital Library Content: WolfWalk and North Carolina Architects and Builders
In this session, NCSU Libraries will demonstrate two projects, WolfWalk and North Carolina Architects and Builders. Both projects are examples of how libraries can expose their specialized content in unique and creative ways. The first project, WolfWalk, is a prototype iPhone application that provides a map-based interface to photos of and historical information on buildings on the NCSU campus. It uses the iPhone's location awareness to allow users to see pictures of buildings near the actual user. The second project, North Carolina Architects and Builders, is a digital collection that highlights the lives and work of architects who have worked in North Carolina. Built with open source software, its cutting edge features show that libraries can create attractive web applications without the need for commercial presentation software.
